BP markets more than 15 billion gallons of gasoline every year to U.S. consumers through 13,000 BP and ARCO branded retail outlets and supplies more than four billion gallons of fuel annually to fleets, industrial users, auto and truck manufacturers, railroads and utilities.
BP is the single, global brand formed by the combination of the former British Petroleum, Amoco Corporation, Atlantic Richfield (ARCO) and Burmah Castrol. BP is a global producer, manufacturer and marketer of oil, gas, chemicals and renewable energy sources. Following a series of mergers and acquisitions with Amoco, ARCO, Burmah Castrol and Vastar, BP had become the largest oil and gas producer by 2001 and one of the largest gasoline retailers in the United States. But the history of the companies that came to form today’s BP stretches way back into the 1800s. British Petroleum, which traces its origin to 1901, was already known informally as BP when it entered the North American oil business as a pioneer explorer in Alaska during the late 1950s. In 1969, it made a major oil discovery at Prudhoe Bay on Alaska’s North Slope. Through its large share in Prudhoe Bay, BP owned part of the biggest oilfield in the U.S. In the United States, BP markets its products and services under five name brands: BP: A distinctive brand in the U.S. Amoco: Markets uniquely formulated, low-sulfur/lower-emissions premium gasolines. ARCO: A leading retail gasoline brand and the largest-volume supplier on the U.S. West coast am/pm: BP’s leading convenience store brand serves customers on the U.S. West coast through 950 outlets Castrol: A leader in automotive and specialist lubricants - renowned in 150 countries worldwide At the core of BP is an unshakeable commitment to integrity, honest dealing, treating everyone with respect and dignity, striving for mutual advantage and contributing to human progress. In that vein, the company launched BP Alternative Energy in 2005 to help give the world a choice of low-carbon power solutions, thereby making clean energy a reality for more people in more places. BP Alternative Energy provides low and zero-carbon electricity from wind, solar, hydrogen power with carbon capture and storage and natural gas-fired power generation. BP will invest at least $8 billion over 10 years in Alternative Energy projects. Every day, BP serves millions of customers in the United States. They provide products that improve Americans’ quality of life. BP works hard so the consumer can drive cars, heat their homes and turn on light switches with minimal impact to the environment.
